Past experiences can cause certain patients extreme anxiety associated with dental care. Unfortunately, that fear can result in little or no preventative care which ultimately only adds to the problem. Routine dental cleanings and exams are virtually painless and can prevent more extensive and potentially uncomfortable procedures later. When a patient (either an adult or a child) is extremely apprehensive or anxious, sedation is a possible option.
For adults, your doctor may prescribe a very gentle oral medication to take a few hours prior to your appointment. Although you are completely conscious, these medications can relieve anxiety and make your dental visit more comfortable for you.
For children who are extremely apprehensive or need special care, an oral sedative can help to ensure the most pleasant and comfortable dental experience possible. This is not general anesthesia. It is a level of sedation that will relax your child and relieve his/her anxiety to allow us to complete the planned dental treatment with as minimal an amount of emotional trauma as possible. One of the best effects of oral conscious sedation is that there is an amnesiac effect – your child has little or no memory of the entire procedure.
A cloth positioning/restraining wrap will be used during treatment to prevent unintentional movement that could cause injury during delicate dental procedures. The use of this wrap also ensures that the patient remain in a proper position to maintain a clear breathing passage. Our intent is to produce cooperative patients of the future who value good dental care – not adults fearful of the dentist.
Intravenous sedation and general anesthesia are available for both adults and children by certified anesthesiologists when indicated. These services provide a deeper level of sedation in a safe clinical environment. You and your dentist can discuss these services and determine which is best for you and/or your child.
