Root Canal Therapy

Endodontic treatment, also known as root canal therapy is necessary when a tooth pulp (nerve) becomes inflamed or infected. The word “endo” is the Greek word for “inside” and “odont” is the word for “tooth”. Hence, endodontic treatment cares for the inside of a tooth.

There are many causes for a tooth pulp to become inflamed or infected. Deep decay, repeated dental procedures, a crack or chip or a blow to a tooth may cause pulp damage even if there is no visible damage. Signs of pulp damage include pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, discoloration of the tooth and swelling. Sometimes there are no symptoms.

To perform a root canal, your dentist (or endodontist) removes the inflamed or infected pulp, carefully cleans and shapes the inside of the tooth, then fills and seals the space. After a short time, you will return to your dentist for placement of a crown or other restoration to protect and restore it to full function.

Most teeth can be endodontically treated, and most endodontically treated teeth last as long as other natural teeth. When endodontic treatment is not effective, endodontic surgery may be able to save the tooth.
